Name: Professor Cheshire Cloudrunner
Age: 33
Year: N/A (Teacher)
Dorm: Master of the Wind Dorm
What: human
Physical: Cheshire is a slight man about 5 ft 6 and three-quarter inches. He has his father's light-brown, almost-hazel eyes and dark skin, but takes after his mother's side of the family in all other respects. He wears his coarse black hair in the traditional hair-style worn by Hopi men after their initiation into the priesthood society. Eagle fluffs (which represent a cloud burst or rain) are attached to the ends of his braids about mid-back, and he wears a battered, faded bandana to keep his hair out of his face. He's lean and toned from countless hours outdoors and running up and down the slopes of the wind dorm after his students. Generally, he wears spandex-like shorts that hug him like a second skin for decreased air resistance and a sleeveless t-shirt. Weather never seems to bother him, and he goes barefoot even when there's snow on the ground.
Personality: He smiles often, appreciates a good prank, is generally an easy-going man, but a stern, no-nonsense teacher. One of his favorite tricks is levitation (which isn't). Very little of which happens on the slopes of the Little Windy Hill (the other name for the dorm) escapes his notice. He prefers to let his students learn from their mistakes rather than prevent them, but is fair and just when called to action. Because his business is broadcast live through the weather (this is something he's struggled with all his life), he's become a very private man and keeps as much to himself as he can. More at home amongst the birds and clouds, Cheshire has few very close friends but gets along well with practically everyone.
Bio: Cheshire belongs to an illustrious magical family of fire witches. They came over to the Americas as slaves, settling first in the West Indies and Brazil before eventually making their way to the United States. They are proud of their rich, varied heritage and exotic looks from the mixture of bloodlines.
His mother is a Hopi Indian and the leader of her small tribe. His father is the last in an off-shoot of the Family Line. A rare circumstance, the two fell in love. Cheshire's father applied to the Family and, due in no small part to his lack of magical potential, were allowed to marry. Nothing of any interest had come from that end of the Family Line in so long that no one expected anything to come of it.
There were five children, all with extraordinarily strong magical potential. The boys trained under the shaman of their tribe. The girls (because only women of the Line ever manifested the ability to manipulate fire) were sent to a distant relative capable of teaching them to master their talents. Cheshire was the middle child. His elder brother would eventually become their tribe's shaman, a powerful man within the tribes. His younger brother was sent by the family to marry a European woman of the Line and his daughters are already powerful witches. He has met his sisters twice.
In all the Family's history, there has never been a male of the Line to manifest magical talent, of any kind, although they carry the genes and potential.
From an early age, Cheshire's parents knew he was special, but no one around them had the training or insight to figure out what 'ailed' the boy for a very long time. Strange things always seemed to happen when he was nearby.
When he was a baby, Arizona had the strangest weather ever in its records. At four, when he contracted chickenpox, the weather was stifling hot for weeks, entirely out of season, leading to a dreadful drought not ended for years. When his first childhood crush broke his heart, it rained for weeks on end, (signaling the end of the drought). At the onset of puberty, tornadoes, sudden thunderstorms, and fires plagued the reservation, and there always seems to be a draft whenever he's around.
By the time Cheshire was fifteen, his parents could no longer handle him, and everyone else was frightened of him. The shamans considered him a kachina (spirit) come down to Earth in the form of a man, but they hadn't the slightest idea what to do about it. In the end, he was sent away to a series of small boarding schools for children with magical gifts. He lived at each one for a shorter and shorter amount of time before finally ending up at Northwood.
He went home after graduation and stayed several years. He settled in with the other shamans and was initiated into the priesthood, where he chose his name, Cloudrunner. He wanted Skywalker, but the elders were not amused. He abruptly departed after the Family started demanding he get married. As he told them, he has no intention of being sucked into their 'breeding program.' Being at Northwood keeps the matriarchs of the family at a distance, and he's quite happy with that.
Cheshire teaches archery, hang gliding, Basics of Wind Manipulation I, II, and III, and Weather Working for advanced students (seniors unless personally invited by him to attend).
Position: Top, but if the right person comes along, he willingly bottom. (he's actually bi-sexual and for the last couple years has had a girlfriend in town, but this summer has been unusually stormy as he adjusts to being single again)
