He had been busy all day making the stuff to sell, but now that the performers were actually out performing instead of helping him cart them around, he was having to keep making the foody items, then bringing them out to the stall himself before returning to make more.

It was during one of these trips, where he had dumped off the batches of sweet foods that one of the sellers mentioned that he was worried about Freddie, who had not been looking that well. Worried, not only that the other man was ill, but also his cooking might have caused it (such was the way his mind worked), he would go in search of the circus owner. It did not take long for him to find the man, and he was soon by his side.

"Gods Freddie, what's wrong?! Should I call a physician? Shall I help you back to your cabin?" His eyes were filled with concern and anxiety.

"Ohhh!" moaned Freddie, curling into a tight ball. "Tell the ground to stop moving!" He flinched away from Saquir's touch and from any loud noise, which was pretty much anything louder than a low murmur.

Many of the circus performers, either waiting to go on or just coming off-stage, began to crowd around asking questions. Freddie never got sick! Those who had seen him stumble off stage knew this was not one of his elaborate pranks or jokes, and Freddie's inability to tell them off or comfort with his usual banter made everyone even more worried.

"Let me give you a hand," said Pedon, one of their animal trainers. He knelt down between Jasair and Saquir, dwarfing both and even making Freddie look small.

"Nooo," groaned Freddie as he felt more hands on him. He opened his eyes briefly and the sparkling black irises spun slowly, mirroring his distress.

Pedon ignored the hubub and Freddie's protests, lifting him as easily as one of his mini dogs. He didn't even flinch when the movement caused Freddie to retch again.

"Ohhh ... kill me, I want to die," moaned Freddie. He closed his eyes against the hot, bright sunlight outside.

"Saquir! Saquir!" called one of the other performers. "The Regent's here!" Her face was frightened and overwhelmed, glancing from Freddie to Saquir and back again. "He's demanding to see Freddie! Says, says he'll come back with guards and arrest us all!" She wrung her hands. "What do I do? He won't go away!"

Saquir moved after Freddie as his boy came over and the animal man picked the ringmaster up, "You know we can't do that Freddie." He murmured, "You, make sure the show goes on, I don't care how, Jasair, go get some cool cloths to put on his head, Pedon, get him inside the airship, we have to cool him down." He said quickly, following after and turning when Jaynie came over to him. He frowned deeply, his brows furrowing, "Stall him." He told her softly, "I don't care how, but stall him until we know what's wrong." He ushered Pedon in front of him, "Take him to the airship, now." He ordered. He was in charge if Freddie was out of commish. "Jaynie!" He hollered, "Don't let him leave, I'll be there in a moment to discuss." He moved back into the kitchens, "Jasair, Freddie's in the ship!" He called, letting him know where to take the cloths and the pail of water.

He hurried to where Jaynie had run off to, swallowing, he wasn't really the public face of the Circus, Freddie was, but he put on his best sincere smile and grabbed himself a step stool so he could look at the regent better. He trotted over, and lo and behold, the corpulent man who ran the area was there, looking terribly unhappy as Jaynie gave him her most cheerful of conversations. "Lord Regent," He said, bowing low, before he set down the step-stool and waved Jaynie off, "Such a pleasure to see you..."

"Who are you? I wanted to see Freddie, not his nanny goat." He grumbled loudly, "Don't make me..."

"Lord Regent, Freddie is taking care of some things here in the circus that only he can attend to, in his absence I am his second in command, and thus, at the moment, I am in charge." He said smoothly, "It is a wonderful pleasure, as always, to see you coming to our circus, and I can assure you, as soon as his current business is concluded, please, humor me for now, and let me be of assistance to you in any way I can. Perhaps I can interest you in something from our kitchens? Our very best brandywine, maybe? Gleaned from the far western borders where they are famous for their production of such delights." He smiled, but it was a showman's smile, polite, warm, but distant, he was being on his very best behavior.

((just a note: Freddie's an actor; ie he's being melodramatic because
he doesn't know how to handle the situation. He does feel very sick,
though. lol))

<<Freddie>>

The cooler air of the ship hit Freddie like a broadside and he shivered
violently in Pedon's arms. He kept his eyes closed because seeing the
world lurch around him made him want to retch again and that was
unbearable. His throat hurt, and his lunch definitely was not so tasty
anymore.

They set him down on his bed and hands fumbled with his necktie and the outermost of his garments, but Freddie batted them away.

"Get away, get away!" he whined. He curled up again and wished for the world to end. "Leave me alone!"

Meanwhile, Oxfen Esaur the Fourth, twenty-third Regent of Jan, scowled down at the little circus man who came to meet him.

"That is total bollux," he snapped, his belly jiggling in his suit.
"Miss-ster Fantastik is ill, and I want to see him at once!"

The regent came to every performance because they were magical and
fatastical. He was a boy again during the show, and Freddie was the
conductor, as equally fey and alluring. That Freddie was not his
usual, charming self this afternoon was worrisome, because Freddie
never missed a show. Combined with the day before, and the circus
hands' refusal to allow him entry -- he was the Regent! -- and Oxfen
was quite alarmed.

"I have summoned my physician," he stated, alarm translating to visible
anger. "You will allow a full examination, or I will impound your ship
and arrest all of you." He found looking imposing at the little man
quite awkward. He wasn't used to intimidating children. "Now, you will take me to Freddie. At once."

((Oh yeah, I'll put this in my bio but Dark and I agreed that Enrir has been on the ship for about a year))

Enrir opened his eyes and sighed, his breath misting around him as he combined the cool of his Air with the air in the room. His eyes skipped over his quarters on the ship, noting anything and everything that lay within his gaze and then stopped at the locked door. Most people knew he was currently indisposed and most never bothered him, but occassionally for the past three days he had heard the distinct sound of the lock rattling as someone tested the door.

He felt he had accomplished something by not burning down the door.

Sighing, he unfolded his legs and gracefully came to his feet. Shaking out his hair, he skimmed his hand over his flat stomach and grimaced. He hadn't eaten since Retreating and his stomach felt like a shriveled prune wanting to burst. He growled to himself as he stalked over to the window to see outside. He knew that they had been making for the Regent's district, but he had no way of knowing if they were there. Sometimes Freddie freaked out and delayed the ship - even for only a few days.

The low sun hit Enrir in the eyes and he growled again, rubbing his pale arms against the chill in the room. Outside would be hot enough - something he wouldn't mind. But his forced Chill had been a requirement for his bi-yearly Retreat. Breathing slowly, allowing his body to get used to wakefullness again, he moved over tothe bed and picked up the clothes he had so neatly stacked before getting started.

Pulling his leather pants over his long legs, he considered going to the kitchens and grabbing something to eat, but he knew he would just overstuff himself and get a pouch for the next couple of hours - so he refrained from that train of thought and slipped into his black shirt and red panelled jacket. Though the heat would be nigh unbearable for those around him, Enrir found it pleasant and took every opportunity to show off his self stitched red lightning bolts. Though nobody knew he had stitched them himself, he still felt pride when someone admired his suit.

Quietly unlocking the door, he stuck his head out and slipped through, closing it behind him. Standing in the small hallway for a moment, he took some time to adjust to the heat. It felt glorious and comfortable against the Chill that had permeated his quarters for the last three days and he felt at once refreshed and strangely sleepy.

Enrir wandered through the ship and out into the midday sun. The show had already started and most people were gathered either to wait at the various tents for their acts to commence or scuttling around making sure things were in their right place. Of Freddie and Saquir there was no sign and strangely he couldn't hear Freddie's booming voice on the mic.

Changing his mind, he headed on over to the kitchens and found the Jasair wasn't there either. Snagging someone by the collar, he loomed over the greenhorn and muttered, "Where is every body? I know they're not performing."

Unfortunately this particular participant was brand new. Only a day old... and he had never met Enrir before, let alone knew who he was. So he promptly started screaming and with a muttered oath Enrir let him go - letting him skid along the ground a few feet before stalking off.

Geeze, disappear for a few days and they change the routine on you. Go figure.

And he was hungry!

Finally he spotted Saquir and began to stalk towards him, his mood putting him in a looming frame of mind. He didn't even bother to acknowledge who the man was talking to. "Where's Freddie?"

Saquir gave the Regent a very polite smile, "I'm terribly sorry sir, Freddie's not taking any visitors right now." He said calmly, "In the meantime..."

"Not in the meantime, I must see Freddie!" It was important to the man, of course, it was, but Saquir did not have the time to handle the man.

"No, sir, we are in the middle of a performance, you will please, return to your seat." He laid his hand on the mans arm, insistently, but the Regent would have none of it.

"You will take me to Freddie, or I'll start on that end and start arresting as I go." The Regent frowned at him, his eyes narrowing.

Saquir's jaw clenched, his hand tightening on the other's arms, "It's fair to say, we have some of the very best escape artists, and when they escape, they will release the others and then, when we are all back here, we will leave and never, ever return." He said quietly, "However, Lord Regent, since you do bring in a nice revenue, I will see if Freddie will allow you to visit him personally when the show is finished. Please return to your seat, and finish watching the show. Stay there until everyone else has left. I will go and get you and take you to Freddie." He said urgently, starting when the elemental bounced over. "Just a moment Enrir." He said tersely to the other, his eyes telling the other to make himself scarce for a second.

The Regent looked to the other, the newcomer, so many strange people, Saquir knew, and waved his hand for Enrir, "If you don't mind waiting for a while longer. And your physician, will not be seeing Freddie. We have our own. No offense to your physician, but we don't trust outsiders much." He said quietly.

<<the Regent of Jan>>

The Regent's eyes narrowed and his mouth turned down into a frightening scowl. This ... this performer was a commoner and was speaking as if to an equal. Not only that, but he'd soiled the Regent's sleeve!

"You mind your tongue, upstart brat!" he spat. The answering threat surprised him, but his casual courage and freedom was something that the Regent had always admired about Freddie. It made sense that the same would be found amongst his people.

The newcomer was an interesting one. The Regent remembered the man's firey performance with awe. He was on the playbill as the villain of the night's show, and the Regent was looking forward to it.

But there would be no performance if the performers did not get out of his way! Managing a circus -- hell, any business was hard work, and the Regent had been trying to get Freddie to hand it over to someone else more fitting and capable of the work for years. This time, he wasn't going to be put off.

"We'll see about that," he answered the midget's threat. "Freddie is ill, and I am out of patience. I will see him!" He strong-armed past the performers, his bodyguard hurrying up to surround him and pacify anyone who got in his way.

"My physician is the best in Jan," he tossed over his shoulder. "I don't know what kind of quack you lot use, but Freddie's ill, and he'll need cared for by the best. Obviously, you aren't fit to do that!" He should never have let the man out of his sight the day before. He'd seemed well enough at the performance, however.

"Freddie!" he shouted, striding to the top of the ramp leading into the ship. There were more of the circus performers surrounding them now, and his bodyguards had their hands on the pommels of their swords, glancing around anxiously as tensions rose.

Saquir blocked the corridor. "You cannot come in here!" He had enough muscle behind him to make this very awkward. "This is domain property of Madya --"

"Out of my way!" He pointed a finger at someone. "You! Take me to Freddie. Now!"

<<Freddie>>

The ringmaster's voice sailed over the mutterings of the crowd: "Is there a problem?" His people parted for him, and he stepped to the front, Jasair hovering slightly behind him, ready to catch his elbow if he fell.

"Freddie!" Worry quickly washed away the Regent's anger. He clasped Freddie's hands in his, looking earnestly into his face. "You look dreadful! Should you be up?"

Plucking his fingers out of the Regent's hands, Freddie shrugged and smiled. "It's just the heat, your excellency. As always, your solicitude is flattering, but unnecessary."

"The heat?" the Regent echoed dubiously. Freddie's luxurious hair was down and his clothes loosened, but he looked ready to faint at any moment. The Regent very much wanted to cradle and comfort the body that looked far too thin to his appraising eye.

"Please, your Excellency, it is nothing. My people are just ..." he paused to glance over at Saquir and smile again. "Overprotective. The heat in the tent is oppressive, and I have not been drinking enough water."

"Then you should be resting!" He was aghast. "Allow me to escort you to your room. My physician will be here any moment. Let him reassure me as to your health."

Freddie closed his eyes a second to fight the urge to be sick. He felt Jasair take an unobtrusive step closer and wanted to just shout at everyone to go away and leave him alone! But he couldn't. He should have known the Regent would follow him, damned man watched him far too closely, and Freddie knew all too well how obstinate the man was. The commotion could only have been his doing.

"That's not necessary," he answered quickly, summoning extra energy from somewhere to plaster on a fresh smile and straighten his spine a little to hopefully look less sick. "Truly, your excellency, I shall be fine with a little rest." He caught sight of Enrir nearby and nodded at him. "It's cooler in here, see? And Enrir, there, is a genius with the air conditioning. I was looking for him, you see."

"Well." The Regent was no less anxious, but seeing Freddie relieved some of his concerns.

"I am fine."

"If you swear that you will rest," the Regent said sternly. "You take far too little interest in your own health, Freddie. I could not bear it if something were to happen to you."

"You are too kind, sir. And, yes, I am off to my bed as we speak." Again, he added mentally.

"We did not get to speak yesterday upon your arrival, and there is much we need to discuss. I shall see you this evening?"

Freddie sighed. "Certainly, your Excellency. I have some sweet wines from Koine that we can share following the show. It's new this year, and I think you will find it exhilerating."

"I shall look forward to it, then." He took one of Freddie's hands and kissed the knuckles. "Rest well. Until tonight, then."

Freddie kept on his pleasant smile until the Regent was no longer in sight and then sagged against Jasair, his head reeling. "Gods, I hate that man," he muttered. His clothing was far too tight again. "Saquir." Looking up and shoving damp hair out of his face with a shaky hand, Freddie asked, "What ever did you say to piss him off?"

Jasair in the meantime had been tending to Freddie. He was worried, terribly worried. Freddie never got sick, and never as bad as this. Sitting beside the bed with the damp cloths he would tend to him. Fuck the kitchen duties. Real worry was in his eyes, and he wanted to do more than merely change the cloths, but whether he might have ended up doing so, or not, the chance was gone as the rucus was heard out there. He frowned. What was going on out there?!

He got up to go and see, and as soon as he opened the cabin door a little the full volume of the argument blasted in making him wince. Turning he came to face Freddie trying to haul himself up out of bed. "You shouldn't be getting up!" he said, moving swiftly back over to the circus owner. "Freddie you arn't well. Saquir will take care of it." Freddie was having none of it though, and soon he was left to hover and follow behind as Freddie put on a brave exterior to get rid of the Regent.

He had to admit, seeing the man there like that, all blown up in his own importance, he did seem scary. All the more scary because the Regent really did have the power to carry out the threats he had been making, and likely all the circus and the audience had heard to depending on what act was on.

He would hover there, worried as Freddie stood up to the man. It never ceased to amaze him just how good he was at dealing with these sorts of situations, but he could tell also that he was suffering for the effort. When the man was gone, Jasair would bear the other's weight against his own as he sagged with fatigue and illness, not sure how far to go. Should he wrap his arms around him? That would seem way too intimate, especially since the situation had gathered such a crowd, but at the same time he was worried the other would fall. But gods he wanted to. "We should get you back to bed" he said quietly, hoping Saquir would calm down enough not to retort. He gave his father a pleading look and would help guide Freddie back to his cabin, bearing his weight if need be.

Saquir, infuriated at this point was insisting the Regent stay back and off the ship, he was not welcome, and as he kept trying to see where Freddie was, what Freddie was doing he snarled under his breath and blocked the way to the crew quarters. His tail flicking agitatedly, interrupted, scorned, called a child, a brat even! How dare he! Generally level headed, he was calm, he was polite, but the Regent was pushing every red button Saquir had at the moment and he wanted to do nothing more than wring the man's ugly little neck. He growled, "You ugly son of a..." He muttered and then Freddie was there, and was smoothing every thing out with flowery words and generous gestures. However the Regent was touching Freddie, when Freddie didn't like to be touched, and he clenched his jaw, his hands flexing in a manner that would threaten death if the Regent continued to touch all over him.

He felt a hand on his shoulder and he growled, glowering at Jaynie who coaxed him away from the Regent, obviously she'd noticed he was going to be aching to throttle the Regent. He stepped back, letting Freddie send him on his way before he appeared at the other's elbow, "I told the arrogant sonofabitch no." He snapped. "He was pushy and rude and Freddie, I want to kill him."

Freddie merely snickered at him, "Yeah, yeah." He said, turning to go back to his room.

He went to Jasair, his tail flicking angrily, "No, Jasair, there is a show to finish." He said cooly, "It's a wonder things haven't fallen apart yet." He snarled, not at Jasair, but just in general, he was angry and frustrated and if he caught the Regent alone, he was either going to hurt him, or kill him. He wasn't sure. He huffed, pacing a moment, he had to be on in a second, he was sure, or someone had forgotten something or something had gone wrong with the circus. God. "Jasair!" He turned, "No one, especially not the Regent, enters Freddie's rooms. Please, go with him and lock the door behind you." He said, before he stalked back to the tents, he'd see to Freddie and Jasair once the show was done.

Enrir obviously got the impression finally of just who the Regent was and quieted down. There was something wrong, all of the performers were tense and Saquire was even more in a mood than he usually was. He was still his bossy little self though - Enrir always supposed he was compensating for something.

He pushed his short crimson hair out of his eyes and gave a small smile as he trailed behind the Regent's wake, making his way towards Freddies quarters. He was slightly concerned, after all the man had given him a place to go when he could no no-where, but he wasn't all that worried. Freddie never got sick.

As he followed the fuming Regent, he began to idly wonder about his next act. He knew he had promised to do his Sky Lights as soon as he was far from Retreat, but his felt oddly weak, though refreshed. Perhaps tonight he could get away with some smaller tricks.

When he got a good look at Freddie though, he blanched. He actually looked ill! Trying not to mutter an oath, he stood there, unknowing of what to do. As the Regent left, he shook his head and stepped quietly into the room after Freddie and Jasair. "Is it just the heat? I can change the atmosphere, though only for an hour or so." His face was concerned and his eyes seemed to skip over Freddie, as if looking for injuries.

He ignored Saquir's growling. Through the year he had been with the circus he had grown used to the man and almost paid his moods no heed. He didn't reach to touch Freddie as he knew he didn't like to be touched, but he crossed over his clothing with his eyes, always seeming to see more than there was to see.

<<Freddie>>

Already Freddie hated being sick. He'd always thought it kind of a grand adventure, but it seemed that each time the memory was far better than the reality. He supposed in a few days or a week he'd look back at this and laugh, but right now he was otherwise occupied.

He'd found the concept of dry-heaving intriguing, but he would much rather have something in his stomach to throw up instead of the dry, burning sensation in the back of his throat when his stomach seized three times on the way back to his cabin. He was so dizzy that if Jasair hadn't been there to guide him he wondered if he'd have made it back at all. What he really wanted was to just curl up in bed and be quietly miserable for awhile. His head was throbbing, his eyes hurt from the tears forced out when he vomited, and he felt like his stomach was being wrenched and twisted about like the wet rags Jasair wrung out for his forehead.

He collapsed on his bed and flopped sideways. Almost instantly the nausea abated, only leaving him with a sour, aching gut and a throbbing headache.

"I'm sure it has something to do with the heat," he answered Enrir's question. "But I swear, Jasir, you bring that water over here and I will kill you." His stomach clenched painfully again just at the thought of eating or drinking anything.

He wanted to undress but only fumbled with the top buttons of his outermost waistcoat, wiping his perspiring face with a sleeve.

"I would love for you to cool things down in here, Enrir," he said, "But only if it won't take too much out of you. Need you tonight, it's the new show, and you should rest, too. Your retreat go okay?"

If Jasair stayed close by, Freddie would bat at him and say, "Quit hovering, damn you!" He clenched his eyes closed and wrapped his arms around himself as he tucked his knees up. "Nng. I hate this place. Gods, I hate this place!"

Enrir bowed his head gracefully, "For you Freddie, I'll do it. Besides, I did offer, didn't I?" He closed his eyes and breathed deeply, only slightly feeling nauseous after being on Retreat and sighed. There wasn't anything flash about it, it just became a few degrees cooler, enough to be comfortable and yet not enough to end up chilling after a while.

"This will last most of the afternoon - but I suggest keeping the door closed so it does not escape."

Then he smiled, "My Retreat went well - " he showed teeth, "Except for some interruptions. I didn't burn down the cabin door this time Freddie, don't worry." He never told anyone just what he did on Retreat, or what it was for, but Freddie had understood that it was something that Enrir just had to do.

A shine came into his eyes. "Tonight we will give them a show to remember - I trust there were no changes made while I was away?"

Rather than hovering, Enrir just stood near the door and chatted calmly. It almost seemed like he didn't care, but Freddie would know that was just his way. Him staying would speak volumes enough of his concern.

Helping Freddie back to the room, he was aware of Enrir coming along with them. He had never been that comfortable with the other man, mainly due to the fact he was a walking timebomb of elemental power. Ok, so perhaps he was a little bit bias against the elemental, but from the wreckage he had seen before when Enrir lost it, he was more than a little wary of the man. Still, he was, like with most in the place, civil and got on well enough despite this.

"Could you get my knives from the kitchen for me please, Enrir?" he asked. Saquir had asked him to stay and watch no one (else) came into the room. The fact that he had been told to guard the door meant he had to have some way of doing it. Still, all those in the circus that had been here more than a couple of weeks would understand he was unlikely to shed any blood, but sharp knives being whorled at you was a distinct deterrent to would-be intruders.

<<Freddie>>

He sighed as the cool air caressed his face and allowed his eyes to fall closed. "No. No changes," he mumbled. He even smiled a little. The night's performance was new this year and Freddie was quite proud of how hard the circus had worked to get it right during their non-touring months. The first few stops had honed the show and it never failed to bring back an even bigger crowd the following night. He was definitely thinking ahead and beginning to work on a new version for the following year.

Trusting in Jasair to safeguard his privacy, Freddie yanked a light blanket over his shoulders and snuggled down as the room grew even cooler. Hidden, he tugged free a couple layers and loosened his pants, still feeling quite tight. He was hungry again, but he was determined not to think about that.

His body relaxed quickly and completely and before he knew it he was fast asleep, even snoring softly. He would have been astonished ordinarily, being that he wasn't used to people watching him as he slept, but he must have been more tired than he'd thought.

Only the top of his hair and mounds of black curls, the fingers of one hand and his toes (kicked free of their shoes), showed outside the concealing blanket. He would eventually relax from his rigid posture, but stay on his side as he slept, dreaming of fantastical creatures, 'death-defying' stunts, and 'oohs!' and 'aahs!' from the watching crowd. It was enough to make him smile dreamily.

Enrir nodded as Freddie told him there had been no changes, he watched Jasair watching him and resisted the urge to grin evilly. Today was probably not a good day to mess with the knife thrower, almost every one was aware of how he felt about Freddie. Well, you'd have to be blind not to be aware.

"Of course Jasair, I trust they're all in their case?" well, maybe he couldn't resist that hard.

Turning on his heel, he slipped out of the room, making sure to add a little cooler air to replace what had been lost when he opened the door. Making the trip was easy and most of the others left him alone, even those in the kitchen. Grabbing the small case where Jasair kept his knives (the good ones) and slipped a hand around a pie. Perhaps eating just a little wouldn't be too bad.

But he did exit quickly just in case he got too hungry!

Getting back was just as quick and he knocked before entering, grinning at Jasair as he presented him with the knife case with a flourish. Then he made his way out again - thinking over his part in tonight's action. He knew Freddie would be alright. For anyone that wanted to see him, he would be wanndering around deep in thought.

<<Freddie>>

When Freddie woke to the chimes of his waterclock and bounded from bed, he halted rather comically in the center of his cabin, staring at Jasair. He blushed and opened his mouth to speak, but instead dashed into his bathroom, slamming the door behind him. He washed up in the normal way and, wrapping his robe securely around himself, poked his head out the door to check if the coast was clear.

If he saw Jasair, he would politely ask him to step outside (and wait for him to do so) before entering the main room and double-checking that the door was locked and he was alone.

His stomach rumbled greedily as he dressed, but Freddie ignored it. He felt fine now, but he didn't want to risk it. This was his favorite performance and he did not want to miss it.

By now, the circus grounds were filled with people enjoying the mini acts and attractions between shows, giving the grounds a vigorous, festive atmosphere, especially with all the lights beginning to sparkle in the twilight's gathering gloom. It was the time of day Freddie like best, reminding him of the carnival-like air of Madya, where he'd first seen Saquir and Jasair, and the grand idea for the circus first popped into his head.

He smiled at the memory, picked up his props for the night and steeled himself for whatever awaited him as he opened the door and stepped outside his cabin.

Enrir scowled. Things weren't going right, and it wasn't his fault. Greenhorns had ruined his performance shirts and now he had use the backups. Which had been designed when the idea for this particular performance had first come into being. Months ago.... and they no longer fitted and NOT to mention, they looked terrible compared to the new and improved versions! As he stood patiently - very patiently! - while a woman (whose name he couldn't be bothered to remember) hovered around him, pinning things up and practically re-stitching the shirt back onto him, he resisted the urge to turn into a giant ball of flame and burn the whole place down.

Only the memory of Freddie snuggled up in bed kept him from igniting - and quite literally.

Biting off an oath, he glared embers down at the woman as she hurriedly pulled the errant pin out of his flesh. He growled and supressed the inferno once again. "It's fine!" he finally snarled and stalked out of her hands and into the gathering area. Most of those people were already dressed and limbering up for tonight's show. People saw the look on his face and decided to stay clear of him. It suited him tonight - he was playing King Oberon and the mood suited him.

Freddie or Saquir would probably be the only ones that could approach him now, before the show. He'd likely light someone up just for looking at him at the moment. Nobody, absolutely nobody messed with his shirts!

<<Freddie>>

Leaving Jasair with instructions for preparing snacks, wine, and a room for after the night's performance, Freddie moves toward the Big Top.

Time for the show!

Not only the crowd anticipated the night's show. Excitement permeated everything that evening. There were no stage decorations, only the props carried in and out by the performers, but the special effects crew was busy with last-minute adjustments, and those not actively participating in the show generally helped out as extra stage hands, if they weren't otherwise needed elsewhere.

Freddie stayed hidden for the beginning. After the usual welcome speech, he faded to the background as the lights came down and the first performers entered. The music was slow, powerful thumps on the drums to emphasize the exotic theme. This was Enrir's chance to shine as Freddie began the introduction:

In a time not long ago, in a forest not too far away, lived a fantastic, mystical people known as Fairies. They lived at peace amongst the trees, and the most powerful among them was Oberon, the Fairy King. The time is drawing nearer to the Fairy King's marriage to the beautiful Lyta and all the Fairies are rejoicing.

The center ring carried the main storyline, while the supplemental activities occurred within the others. At the beginning, Oberon was center stage, his 'court' around him. The musicians played on a slightly elevated platform in one ring and dancers played around them, dressed in their most elaborate finery, tailored to make the individuals look as inhuman and magical as possible. Overhead, acrobats swooped and dove on long ribbons, and in the other ring were performers acting out hunting and playing in the fairy forest.

One day, something extraordinary happened: a woman appeared. Her name was Titania, and she was not a Fairy, but she was fair and beautiful to behold, graceful and demure and the Fairies watched her in wonder. But Oberon, the Fairy King took one look at the beautiful maiden and vowed that she would be his.

The scenes shifted now to focus on Titania as she came onstage and wandered around the forest. First the Fairies hid from her and she had to coax them out, but soon they were playing happily, showing Titania all the secrets of the forest. She joined them in their dances and revelry, moving through the rings while the Fairy King and his court backed out of the spotlight, watching. The small group with Lyta moves further to one side, away from Oberon and his party.

Eventually, Oberon summons Titania, and she comes before the Fairy King.

But Titania knew Oberon's cruel heart and she spurned the Fairy King. Enraged, he threw her from his enchanted palace. Loving the Fairies, however, Titania did not return to whence she came. She stayed and the Fairy King's grew angry and bitter. He vowed that he would stop at nothing until Titania was his bride, and so he summoned Puck, his loyal servant.

They tried many things to convince Titania of Oberon's sincerity, but she turned him away. Then the Fairy King, growing angrier still, brewed a powerful elixir that would guarantee Titania would fall in love with him. He bid Puck to take the brew and place a drop on each of Titania's eyelids while she slept. Thus Oberon would be the first person she saw upon waking, and she would love him from then on.

The Fairy King's betrothed hears of this plan and determines to kill Titania before Oberon can enact his plan, and so she goes in search of her.

Now of course was Puck's time to play, chasing Titania through the Fairy Forest, climbing and swinging to catch up with her, to follow her ere she stops to rest for the night and fouling Lyta's attempts at murder. And everywhere he goes, he causes havoc amongst the Fairies as the potion spills and splashs. Loving couples split, and those who dislike each other heartily become lovers.

At the same time, the Fairy King busies himself organizing a brilliant revel, planning his nuptials to Titania and congratulating himself on the brilliance of his successful plan. Eventually, Puck manages to dose Titania with the potion, and then the adventure becomes getting back to Oberon with the news before Lyta can ruin things. Of course, he arrives too late; Titania has already opened her eyes and fallen in love with a hideous Fairy.

First, Oberon is furious and almost slays Puck in his rage, but Lyta comes arrives at his side and convinces Oberon that perhaps his best plan lies with revenge. They shall make a farce out of the wedding, marrying the lovely young woman to the ugly and clumsy Pyramis, the Fairy with a head like a donkey.

So the wedding plans proceed as the Fairy lands continue to unravel. Friends and families turn upon one another, and lovers quarrel. Out of all the Fairies, only Titania and Pyramis are truly happy. Her kindness and gentleness are untarnished by the spell of the Fairy King, and Oberon grows ashamed.

Slinking away from the rest of the Fairies, Oberon sits beneath the moon and reflects on all his past deeds.

The performers now act out scenes from the Fairy King's youth, reminding him of what it was like to be kindly and loved, reminding Oberon of when he wooed the lovely Lyta. Building to the climax, Oberon decides to reverse his spell in a massive shower of glittery snow tossed down upon all the crowd and stage from far above.

As Puck travels around the Fairies, the spell fades and lovers and friends are reunited. Peace and happiness returns to the forest. Oberon returns to his court, where the wedding plans continue unimpeded. He expects to find that Titania and Pyramis have separated, but their love for one another continues.

Seeing the example of Pyramis and Titania reminds Oberon of his love for Lyta, and the Fairy King blesses the marriage of the Fairy and the human woman under the light of the moon as he is himself wed to his bride, Lyta. Then the Fairies celebrate with their grand revel and all is as it should be.

The end of the show is filled with the best of the performers' acts. Oberon has a light display, acrobats tumble, clowns amuse, animals dance, and the music is upbeat and exhilarating. One at a time they gradually disappear from view as the lights dim until Freddie is the only one standing in the center of the Big Top.

"And so, my friends," he ends his tale. "All shall live happily ever after ...."

Energy fills him, and satisfaction for a job well done. He bows to the audience as the last light goes out and the Big Top fills with cheers and applause. In the dark he vanishes down one of the hatches in the floor. Above, the house lights come on and circus hands begin to direct the people out.

Freddie checks his appearance and snags Saquir before he can remove his costume. He reminds his partner that they have a meeting with the Regent, and Saquir would not be leaving Freddie's side. Though he does not say so, Freddie wants the other man there to maintain Freddie's current appearance and hopefully counteract the Regent's damnable preferences.

Also to join in are the other main cast members: Lyta, Titania, and Oberon.

One of the dressing and preparation rooms has been hastily rearranged and decorated for the private appointment, with low tables and sitting cushions in the style of Jan. Jasir is there as well, putting together the finishing touches as the rest of the performers attempt to relax, as best they can, and Freddie homes in on the food.

"Cheese ...!" he murmurs in greedy whisper, breaking open a sausage to suck out the hot filling.

"Freddie, if you so much as touch that cheese sausage, so help me..." Saquir threatened as he appeared from the middle of nowhere, a faint scowl on his features as he looked up at the other, "You'll make yourself sick again, and I go crazy when you're sick." He said, prying the sausage from his hands, "Go get something else, I mean it!" He said, pushing the other towards something less harsh on the stomach, "Try a mini shepherd's pie. That won't make you sicker. And it has mashed potatoes the way you like." He said, twisting around and undoing the ties from around his tail as he kept an eye on what the other ate, "If you go after the sausages again, I'll tell Jasair not to make them anymore because you make yourself sick on them." He said firmly.

Sometimes, keeping track of Freddie was as bad as keeping track of the young Jasair, he thought to himself, smiling faintly as his tail came free in a long thick cascade of hair. "Much better." He ignored the pouty faces that Freddie kept throwing at him, and he shook his head, the other was absolutely incorrigible. He grabbed some things for himself, some veggies, one or two bits of meat and made himself up a plate as he and Freddie moved back into the room where they would greet the Regent.

Pompous ass that he was.

It had been an altogether stressful and frustrating evening. He had stayed with Freddie while he slept, keeping watch and turning people away from the door should they try to enter. He took what his father said to heart and no one would enter after Enrir had left.

However when Freddie woke once more and started telling him again how to go about making the food and snacks he about snapped, the stress of a sick Freddie was too much. "I know how to do my job Freddie." he said, in perhaps one of the harshest of comments he had ever said to the man since he had reached puberty, which was really not that harsh, but to him it felt harsh. Still, the man was off and getting ready for the show, leaving him to do the usual preparations of snack-making while the show went on. He had been doing it for so long that it was second nature multitasking with all the bits of food in the kitchen.

By the time the show had ended, he was in the gathering room with all the food laid out, putting the last bits down when Freddie and Saquir came in. He glanced up, but Freddie was around so many people that it was easier to just get on with the job, compared to when he had been sick and alone with him. It had been really difficult not to worry more when the man looked like your dream lover. He looked away and put the last of the sausage rolls and sweetmeats down on the plates there, a worried glance over when Freddie went straight for the cheese.

<<Freddie>>

"Hey!" he yelped when Saquir took his sausage. "I was eating that!" He made a grab for it and missed, then tried to take one off the platter, but Saquir slapped his hand. "Damn it, Saquir."

He gave the acrobat his best doe-eye look, spoiled by hungry lust sidetracked by the little cheese slices on top of the meat tray. There were these small, squarish crackers, with slices of meats, a vegetable, cheese, and some sort of garnish. Freddie quickly started plucking the cheese off the top, watching Saquir with the sausage tray and plotting.

The offer of a shepherd's by made him frown. Potatoes made him feel rather queasy. His stomach was really growling now, and he really, really wanted the cheesy sausages. No, forget the sausage part, Freddie just wanted the cheese.

He sidled up to Jasair and nudged him a little. "C'mon, Jasair, help a guy out?

Enrir didn't quite storm into the gathering arena, he more stalked, but his face was one similar to a thundercloud. His shirt was too tight and had almost split during the show, his firelights had been completely off colour (not that anybody would have noticed - but he was a perfectionist) and he had forgotten a few lines. The show had not been a success, not in his eyes and the laughter and stupendous applause of the crowd had only served to feel mocking.

So when he stalked into the gathering tent, he was ready to split some heads. Not any of the other performers, of course, and definitely not Freddie, or Saquir... and probably not Jasair either... but damn it! He growled, pushing past some people rather rudely and grabbing a leg of meat, tearing into it with gnashing teeth and white knuckles.

Panting with his mood, his eyes burned into everyone he looked at. When he saw Freddie he calmed down, only a little and murmured out around a piece of meat, "Sorry Freddie, I'll be better next show. Promise." Only Freddie would have really known all of Enrir's mistakes - after all, he did create the show.

Licking his fingers, he realised he had chewed through bone. And swallowed it too. Great. Now he was going to have indegestion later. Fantastic. Picking up a little meat pie, he took his time this time used his other hand to irreverently rip off his shirt. Burning some of his heat, he dried the slick of sweat he had formed during the show and burned the shreds of his shirt to cinders. The ashes fell to the ground and Enrir gave those around him a grin. His muscles rippled as he breathed hard, calming down now that his stomach had something in it and his shirt was no longer restricting movement.

<<Freddie>>

A flash of skin stole Freddie's eyes and didn't let them go. He immediately forgot about the cheese, turning so that his back was to the table and sliding along the edge towards Enrir. His loose, easy smile had an undertone of something else as he stared at the muscled chest now exposed. How many times had he seen someone's body like this, especially in the fast-paced theatre-performances, and never cared one whit? The thought that ogling was wrong or perverted never even crossed his mind. Enrir's skin was moist with perspiration, shiny under the lantern light.

Posture and gestures unconsciously sensual, he displayed his body in return, fingers moving to loosen and pull off his neck-cloth, unbuttoning his shirt as well as his normal diffidence.

"I'm sure you can make it up to me somehow," he purred. Though he had not the presence of mind to realize what he was doing, all he could think of was how warm and light he felt, and of how much he wanted someone's eyes on him. He licked his lips, pupils dilating as they spun. As if one of the lanterns shown behind them, his eyes glowed softly purple-black as he smiled.

Enrir was not at all concerned about his shirtlessness. His species would often go around naked while in their natural domain and he had less qualms than humans when showing off his body. He was naturally muscled and toned through many a day and night of hard work and performances - and he had often gone shirtless during a show simply to add to the effect - though he could not completely understand why those performances had been his best.

As Freddie sidled closer, Enrir did not get an awkward or discomforting feeling, he simply looked. It was obvious that Freddie was displaying himself - though not the reason why. But Enrir had never been one to pass up an opportunity to look - and having never actually seen Freddie without his billowing clothes - he was naturally curious.

With half a mind on the crowd around them, he reached over and gently pried Freddie's fingers from his buttons. "Perhaps in a more private setting?" his voice slid from his mouth in a low, sensuous murmur. Low enough for only Freddie to hear, but deep enough to raise prickles on the skin.

Fully aware that Freddie had never actually reacted this way to him before, and also fully aware that he had never reacted this way in public before, Enrir gave the man a smile - warm, but sexual free. Politely, and only because he liked the man, he chose to give him a little slap in the face by saying, "I believe the Regent is waiting for us now." Hopefully that would wake Freddie up a little - but not too much. After all, Enrir was still curious.

Saquir's eyes followed Freddie as the other turned from the pursuit of cheezy things, to the pursuit of something else entirely. What in the nine hells was he doing?! For now, he chose not to interfere, hoping that Enrir would have enough good sense to put a stop to it, lest Freddie end up regretting it, but the damn elemental allowed opening for a later time. He made a soft growl, slightly unnatural from his throat, but it was a perfect response to a bad situation, especially with the Regent coming. He moved closer, "Enrir, I don't think you're needed right now to meet the Regent." He said in warning, "I would appreciate if you sat out this meeting tonight, perhaps brush up on those things you missed this evening? So you're better prepared for the next show. His tail switched, an unconscious form of agitation. Now, of all times.

"Freddie, why don't you have a seat?" He glanced to Freddie sternly, he may own the Circus, and run it financially, but Saquir was a force to be reckoned with when things weren't going as smoothly as usual. More than one performer had been booted because they couldn't keep things smooth and it was mostly Saquir's doing. "Have something to drink. Some water." He frowned, looking up at the Circus' taller counterpart, his gaze most certainly stern. "You can see Enrir after the Regent comes and goes. And is gone." His jaw clenched tightly, his teal eyes had gone dark, a sure sign he was serious.

"Good night Enrir." He said to the elemental. He didn't have anything against him, he was a good performer and a good man, but his duty was first to Freddie and Jasair, then the others. Freddie would thank him later, unless this was some strange new side to Freddie that he would have to adapt to. When Enrir had gone, he guided Freddie to a chair, to sit, have a glass of water, maybe wine, to clear his head, and bring him back down to earth. Or at the very least, solid ground.

There was a knock, and he swallowed, the Regent was here.
